The officials at the C-Max maximum security prison in Pretoria who were on duty when Annanias Mathe escaped will not be entrusted with guarding him again.
Correctional services minister Ngconde Balfour, right, said several officials suspected of helping Mathe to escape had been suspended from duty pending an investigation by the National Intelligence Agency.
"There are people who are on suspension who are being interviewed.
"If he [Mathe] goes back there [to C-Max] he will not be meeting the people that we suspect," he said.
Mathe, who faces more than 50 charges - including murder, attempted murder, rape, hijacking and armed robbery - escaped from the country's most secure prison over two week ago.
Mathe was returned to C-Max in Pretoria but yesterday afternoon was rushed to hospital under heavy guard for leg surgery.
