A warrant of arrest has been issued for the wife of a police officer who allegedly hired hit men to gun down her husband in Vanderbijlpark.
Judge Seun Moshidi of the Vereeniging circuit court yesterday issued the warrant after Florence Thoko Mabula, 45, failed to appear in court.
She was reported to be in a private clinic in Sebokeng after being admitted last week "suffering from diabetes".
Mabula, together with her daughter Dikeledi Martha Mokhethi, 26, allegedly hired four hit men to murder her husband, Inspector Moeketsi Mabula, 33, on September 5 2002.
Mabula and Mokhethi are presently out on R5000 bail each.
The state alleges the two women "contracted" Joseph Makhalemele, 21, Sophania Mophuting, 22, Jacob Tshabalala, 21, and Joseph Thabiso Thinane, 21, to murder Mabula for the sum of R5000.
Tshabalala, who pleaded guilty last year, was sentenced to 18 years in jail. Makhalemele and Mophuting are in custody and Thinane remains at large.
Mokhethi, Makhalemele and Mophuting appeared briefly yesterday .
It is alleged that Mabula was called to his Gauteng home urgently by his wife on the day of his murder. When he arrived, the hit men shot him at close range and fled with his service pistol.
Three of the alleged hit men were arrested a few days later in Orange Farm.
According to the dead man's brother, Norman, 45, the family was unaware he was married.
Norman said: "We were shocked when we found out that they were married. We warned him not to become involved with Thoko because she was older than him."
