ANC must unify our country

What happened on Saturday at Moses Mabhida's funeral was a disgrace to South Africa.

What happened on Saturday at Moses Mabhida's funeral was a disgrace to South Africa.

The walkout, while President Thabo Mbeki was talking, shows things are not right in the land - and that protests like these have been allowed to go on too long without any proper intervention.

When people are not in harmony with something, they will use whatever means possible to show their feelings, but nobody thought that the day would come when a ceremony, honouring a fallen comrade, would ever take place at an ANC event.

Although Jacob Zuma did try to calm the situation, the message was clear that the presence of Mbeki was not welcome to certain people.

The ANC should now act with urgency to unify its structures - and the country as a whole.

They should robustly restore harmony and provide leadership which is expected from the leading political party.

The recent stance by the ANC in the Eastern Cape is set to only prolong the uncertain future of a province whose leadership is in chaos.

The president made it clear that he was not interested in a third term, but the Eastern Cape region goes ahead anyway to pass a motion that he should.

The real test is for the ANC to become more proactive, instead of merely reacting all the time to these crises which are threatening to destroy our beautiful democracy.
