Newly elected ANC Eastern Cape chairman Stone Sizani yesterday said his challenge was to unite the party in the province.

Sizani took over from Makhenkesi Stofile, who had left the position vacant, by defeating former Eastern Cape Development Corporation head, Mcebisi Jonas.

Speaking after the elections at Fort Hare in Alice, the former education MEC said he was up to the challenge of making the party stronger.

"I am not saying that there are divisions in the ANC, but there are political differences that have been exaggerated," said Sizani.

He promised to work hard for unity and cohesion in all ANC structures in the province. He said his emphasis would be on collective decisions.

Sizani said he would also work to ensure a better life for all the people in the Eastern Cape.

ANC sources said the conference was characterised by divisions between the rival camps led by Sizani and Jonas. They said both sides sang and chanted their own slogans.

The party has been divided since Stofile and Mluleki George, the defence minister and chairman of the Amathole region, eyed the province's leadership.

Mbulelo Sogon is the new deputy chairman, Siphatho Hand the secretary, Pemmy Majodina assistant secretary and Thoko Xasa the treasurer.

Sizani won 851 votes and Jonas got 651.
