Director of the Arrive Alive campaign, Ntau Letebele, said holiday traffic would lead to an increase in traffic volumes on many of the main routes.
These routes included the N1 between Gauteng and Limpopo, the N1 between Gauteng and the Western and Northern Cape, the N3 between Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, the N4 between Gauteng and Mpumalanga and the N6 and the N9 leading to the Eastern Cape.
He said well over 8,2 million registered vehicles were expected to be on the roads.
The Rolling Enforcement Plan which has been coordinated by the Road Traffic Management Corporation will clamp down on driver offences such as driving under the influence of alcohol, unsafe and illegal overtaking across barrier lines or in the face of oncoming traffic, not wearing seatbelts and speeding.
Letebele advised motorists to stick to safety rules like resting when tired and wearing seatbelts to ensure a safe journey.
Road users can report incidents of bad or good driving to the Arrive Alive Call Centre on 0861-400-800.
The Arrive Alive Information Centre will release media updates on road accidents and road safety tips every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at 2pm, and on Saturdays at 10am.
"We hope this will allow the department to focus more on the real issues of highlighting the consequences of irresponsible behaviour rather than the cricket-type reporting," Letebele said. -- Sapa
