A patient at a Krugersdorp hospital has assaulted two babies, killing one.
Gauteng Health Department spokesman Vusi Sibiya said a woman in the maternity ward at the Dr Yusuf Dadoo hospital grabbed two newborn infants on Tuesday and threw one of them onto the floor.
The nurse on duty managed to catch the other child.
"The two-day-old baby girl who was thrown onto the floor was kicked by the patient and eventually passed away," said Sibiya.
The two babies were not related.
Under the Mental Health Act, the woman was sent for psychiatric observation to the Leratong hospital in Kagiso.
"A decision will be made on Friday (today) as to whether she will be admitted to a psychiatric hospital," said Sibiya.
Sibiya said a high-level investigation into the incident has been had been launched. - Sapa
