More than 1,37 million South Africans were tested for HIV in the year to April.

The Department of Health said on Tuesday that 1715588 people had received counselling before being tested for HIV and 80percent, or 1374638, of those counselled had gone on to be tested for the virus.

Department spokesman Sibani Mngadi said: "The number of people using the government's voluntary counseling and testing [VCT] programme rises everyday.

"The increase is attributed to HIV and Aids awareness campaigns, which encourage people to get to know their HIV status."
