A suspect wanted for murder and armed robbery was wounded during a shootout with the police this week.

Police who were on patrol received information that the suspect was in a house in Chochocho, near Hazyview.

When he saw the police, the 30-year-old suspect produced a firearm and started shooting at the police, but no one was hit.

"When the police fired back they hit him in the leg and arrested him. But surprisingly his firearm was not found," said police spokesman Inspector Jiyela Sibiya.

Police suspect that he might have thrown the gun away after he was shot.

Sibiya said the suspect was admitted to Themba Hospital in KaBokweni near White River. Sibiya said he is under tight police guard at the hospital. He is expected to appear in court when he recovers.

The suspect is wanted in connection with the murder of Collins Mahlangu of Shabalala village in 2002. He allegedly murdered Mahlangu when he tried to steal his car.

According to police, Mahlangu died after he was shot once in the chest. During the shooting Mahlangu tried to shoot back, but was too weak and died.
