The Eastern Cape government has built 40 clinics in the province and also has a extensive training programme for nurses.
The clinics are in the OR Tambo District, which includes Libode, Port St Johns, Mount Frere, Qumbu, Tsomo and Tsolo. Modern equipment and additional staff have been allocated to all the clinics.
Sizwe Kupelo, provincial health department spokesman said: "We are focusing on primary healthcare and are also [in the process] of upgrading our hospitals."
St Lucy's Hospital in Tsolo is in the process of being rebuilt at a cost of about R400 million.
Kupelo said the drive to keep nurses in the province was continuing
"We encourage nurses to remain in the province in an attempt to alleviate the nursing shortage."
He said a programme was started in 1995 where students from poor families were given the opportunity to study nursing in Cuba.
They return to South Africa to complete their final year and their internship.
In the next financial year, the provincial government plans to build 50 more hospitals to service the people living in the Eastern Cape.
