A rape suspect who has been on the run for two years has been arrested by the Mpumalanga police.

The 23-year-old man, from Mangweni village, near Malelane, was arrested on Tuesday. He is accused of raping a 17-year-old girl after threatening her with a gun in 2004.

He allegedly met the teenager on the street and forced her to accompany him to his house at gunpoint. He allegedly raped her repeatedly.

A police spokesman, Constable Mzwandile Nyambi, said yesterday that the man had been on the run for two years.

He was cornered by police and found to be carrying an unlicensed firearm.

"He confessed to owning more illegal guns and said they were with his friends. We will be going to search for them," Nyambi said.

The man will face additional charges of armed robbery related to crimes he allegedly committed while on the run.

An identification parade will be held to determine if he can be linked to other rapes.

Nyambi asked women who had been raped to go to Tonga police station to identify the suspect.

He is expected to appear in court soon.
