The Cats will no longer be purring in next season's Super 14 campaign because they will be roaring like lions, their new name.
Andy Turner, the Golden Lions Rugby Union's chief executive, yesterday confirmed that the Cats brand will be changed and the team will in future be known as the Lions.
The name Lions was used and will continue to be used in the Currie Cup season.
Turner said the decision was approved by the union at the beginning of the month in order to maintain consistency between the two brands.
"After an in-depth market research project, we came to the conclusion to phase out the old name (Cats). It has been made apparent through the research project that there is confusion between the two brands," he said.
