Touran equally good asfamily saloon and MPV

Just as with its main competitors, the Renault Scenic and the Toyota Verso, the VW Touran performs its duties as a family saloon car and multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) equally well.

As one of the better mid-sized MPVs on the market, we didn't pass up the opportunity to test a used version.

Under the skin of the Touran you will find a 2litre turbo-diesel power plant. It is good for a 100kW of power and 320Nm of torque. The torquey nature of the engine makes it possible to really load up and cruise comfortably in city conditions and on the open road.

Though we expected the ride to be good, the handling was surprisingly neutral and safe. Its sure-footedness is helped by the wide body and squat stance.

Volkswagen ESP traction system also ensures maximum traction at all times, enhancing safety in all conditions. With a relatively small turning circle it also proved to be easy to park and turn in confined areas.

Stopping the vehicle posed no problems because the brakes were more than adequate. An electronically controlled ABS system comes standard.

If space for seven people is a priority, the Touran should be your choice. Those square sides might not do much for the vehicle's looks, but they help provide more shoulder room for passengers.

The rear seats can also be removed or folded down according to your needs.

For the rest, the cabin is modern and spacious.

Luxury items were plentiful and included climate control air-conditioning, a front loader CD-player, electric windows and mirrors, a trip computer, cup holders, power steering, central-locking with an alarm, dual-airbags and cruise control.

Great performance, versatility and comfort are but a few of its highlights, and at under R200000 it's an awesome buy.
