Rebels down plane

N'DJAMENA - Chadian rebels yesterday said they had shot down a government military airplane near the eastern town of Abeche, which they seized briefly at the weekend.

Mahamat Nouri, the leader of the rebel Union of Forces for Democracy and Development, said: "The plane was attacking our positions."

A military source in Chad said an aircraft that failed to return to the air base in Abeche after a sortie yesterday morning was missing.- Reuters
