New vein in health

Founded in 1989, Commed is a well-established private medical aid scheme that provides affordable quality healthcare.

Founded in 1989, Commed is a well-established private medical aid scheme that provides affordable quality healthcare.

A new executive team has recently been put in place as a result of structural changes implemented by the board of trustees, under the chairmanship of Asser Mhlongo, in a drive to steer the scheme in a new direction.

The team is headed by the principal officer, Langa Mconi.

This young, dynamic, innovative team is raring to go, and is fully committed to putting Commed on the medical scheme map.

The rest of the team is made up of Xolisile Mbokazi, who heads up the marketing function; Aubrey Maredi, in charge of sales; and Peter Matlou, responsible for service.

"Although we are a new team, we have many years of experience in the healthcare industry," says Mconi.

"Each of us comes from different positions within the industry, giving the team a broad range of perspectives and ideas across a number of issues."

From the outset, the team's focus is to oil existing mechanisms, also ensuring that the three products offered are understandable and the benefits are clear to members.

"A majority of medical aid members across the board do not understand their benefits. For that reason we reconsidered our tone so that we could speak to members and convey their benefits clearly," Mconi says.

Commed's slogan speaks of creating peace of mind for members, and this element of service is critical to Mconi and his team.

"Our focus is on delivery," he says. "Combined with value for money, this is one of the most important things we can offer our members."

The nature of the healthcare climate in South Africa means that running a medical aid scheme comes with plenty of challenges, and while Mconi admits that these need to be overcome, he is not daunted.

Commed's decision to only feature three products is at the heart of their focus on simplicity.

Core, Standard and Deluxe options are self-explanatory, and information regarding benefits and contributions is easily accessible at a glance.
