Three would-be robbers were arrested while trying to open a safe at a Pretoria steel factory yesterday morning.
Police said the men managed to enter the Northern Steel and Pipes factory after they held up the security guard and cut a hole in the roof of the building.
"Once inside the building, they deactivated the alarm and battled to open the safe with an angle grinder," said police spokesman Inspector Katlego Mogale.
She said the men were arrested after the factory's chief security officer called the guard on duty and there was no response.
"He then called the company's owner, who immediately alerted the police, and the men were arrested."
The men are expected to appear in court today.
