The head of the Bakgatla, Chief Nyalala John Molefe Pilane, signed a black economic empowerment deal with Anglo Platinum on Saturday.
The signing, witnessed by Chief Lencoe 11 of Botswana and about 2000 residents, took place at Moruleng Stadium in Saulspoort, North West.
In terms of the deal, the Bakgatla tribe now has a 15 percent interest in the Union Section mine at Swartklip and an interest in the prospecting rights of Magazynskraal and Rooderand mines.
"This is a milestone for my tribe as they will now be the proud owners of the riches in their land,'' said a jubilant Pilane.
