Our leaders must govern their zips

I call on all South Africans to join hands in intensifying the struggle against those who abuse women and children.

I call on all South Africans to join hands in intensifying the struggle against those who abuse women and children.

I think the recent spate of sexual allegations against the top brass within the ANC translates into an open contempt for women. That only 16 days in the year are dedicated to fighting abuse shows how little women and children's rights are regarded by those in charge.

Some state officials even use their power to prey on helpless women.

Recent allegations levelled against a senior member of the Gauteng legislature warrant serious and detailed investigations.

Those who are found to have sexually violated women's rights should face the full wrath of the law.

I suggest that those holding top government positions who are under suspicion for abuse should be suspended until cleared. This would serve as a warning to potential sexual abusers to ensure that the zips of their trousers remain firmly fastened.

I do commend parliament's prompt decision to slap a leave of absence on its chief whip after he allegedly harassed his 21-year-old colleague.

This country's democracy will become a sham if the rights of women and children are not properly recognised.
