New housing scheme for Alexandra residents

Hundreds of families living along the banks of the Juskei River in Alexandra stand to benefit from a development project launched earlier this week.

Hundreds of families living along the banks of the Juskei River in Alexandra stand to benefit from a development project launched earlier this week.

The K206 housing development project is one of the innovative ways in which the Housing Department aims to deal with the problem of seasonal flooding, which claims the lives of hundreds of people along the Juskei riverbanks.

The housing project is a cluster development that houses both low-cost RDP houses and double-story accommodation for rental purposes.

The project will provide 1760 RDP houses and 2156 rental units with backyard rooms.

"The K206 housing development project will bring relief to hundreds of Skwetla families, who will for the first time be afforded the dignity of a proper roof over their heads," said Gauteng Housing MEC Nomvula Mokonyane.

She said that the project would also benefit those who did not qualify for housing subsidies in terms of government policy.

According to the department, most of the people living alongside the river do not qualify and will therefore be accommodated mainly through rental stock.

The development uses high density accommodation to address the unavailability of land in the province and seeks to accommodate people within the same area instead of relocating them to far flung areas, said the department.

Work on the R196million project has already started and will be completed in March 2008. - BuaNews
