Arrested man denies he is fugitive Mathe

Riot Hlatshwayo

A man believed to be Ananias Mathe, the 29-year-old Mozambican who escaped from C-Max Prison in Tshwane on Saturday, was arrested in rural Nkomazi, Mpumalanga, yesterday.

Police have, however, taken the man's fingerprints to verify if he is the wanted fugitive. He looks "exactly" like Mathe, police said.

Mpumalanga Lowveld police spokesman, Superintendent Mtsholi Bhembe, said a special police task force received a tip-off that Mathe was hiding in a house near Komatipoort. They stormed it shortly after midnight and arrested the man, who was in possession of dagga.

"The man denied he was Mathe and said he did not know who they were talking about," said Bhembe.
