Too late for tears

The public spotlight has again fallen on the lucrative business of selling beer in the townships simply because of the ever-increasing competition.

The public spotlight has again fallen on the lucrative business of selling beer in the townships simply because of the ever-increasing competition.

Liquor store owners are now crying foul over South African Breweries' (SAB) direct sale of beer to legalised taverns. They want tavern owners to buy stock from them instead.

SAB has pointed out that it deals with all businesses that have been licensed to sell the holy waters.

To complain now about a practice that is so entrenched misses the point. Bottle store owners must understand they do not hold exclusive rights to buy and sell to tavern owners.

What they need to do is market and promote their business properly by offering better prices that will lure customers.

Without a competitive strategy to sustain their businesses they will be confronted with the reality of having to close down.

They had more than 20 years to rethink their position, but it seems they have woken up to the reality only now.

Too late for tears.
