Gautengers may pay more

Gauteng MEC for finance and economic affairs Paul Mashatile plans to hit residents where it hurts most - in their pockets.

This was one of his proposals in his mid-term budget speech on Tuesday.

Mashatile said the province faced financial challenges as a result of migration and the reincorporation of Mabopane and Ekangala, which could be offset by a new tax on Gautengers.

Percy Mthimkhulu, Mashatile's spokesman, yesterday said the proposal would be presented to the province's executive council for discussion and approval before being implemented.

Mthimkhulu declined to divulge the contents of the proposal, but Sowetan has learnt on good authority that part of the plan was to tax not only motorists, but also other people.

"It is still a proposal and there is nothing concrete at this stage. We will be guided by the input of the executive and other stakeholders," Mthimkhulu said.

lMashatile came under fire in June for spending R96000 at a restaurant on his colleagues after his budget speech.
