Croatian folk singer Dunja Knebl is coming to South Africa.

She will give two performances - one in Pretoria at the State Theatre's Rendezvous Theatre on Saturday at 7pm and one in Johannesburg at The Blues Room, Village Walk, Sandton on November 29.

The core of Knebl's work comprises hauntingly sad songs from northwestern Croatia sung in an old dialect. But her repertoire is substantial and also includes old songs she has arranged into a modernised form for voice and instruments.

Born in Zagreb, Knebl started performing early in life. This was, however, just a hobby for her until she discovered her niche and turned professional in 1993. Since then she hasn't looked back.

Knebl has been a leading force in the Croatian folk music revival since the 1990s and, having mentored many of its exponents, she has succeeded in popularising traditional folk music among the urban youth in Croatia.

Though Knebl's music is simple her lyrics have touched the hearts of audiences around the world and she has performed in many countries, including the Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Slovenia and the UK.

Tickets for Knebl's performances are available at R30 from the Embassy of Croatia or from Computicket at R60 or at The Blues Room.
