Six people died and nine were injured when the taxi in which they were travelling overturned on the road between White River and Sabie in Mpumalanga on Saturday night.

The passengers, from KaBokweni, outside White River, were returning from a tour of the Mac Mac waterfalls and other tourist attractions in the Sabie area.

Constable Gerald Sedibe of the White River police said the driver lost control of the vehicle in a curve and it overturned.

Four passengers and the driver died on the scene and one died on the way to hospital. The injured are being treated in hospital.

Sedibe said the exact cause of the accident could only be determined by investigations.

The Mpumalanga Department of Local Government and Housing has warned road users to be careful because roads are wet and in some areas there have been rocks falling on to roads because of rain.

Meanwhile, in Hazyview four armed men held up a fruit and vegetable shop and stole R8000 and a cellphone yesterday.

The robbers stormed into the shop at about 6.30am when the owner was preparing to open.

Inspector Phillip Fakude of the Hazyview police said: "When the owner told them that he had not opened yet they pointed their firearms at him and demanded money and his cellphone."

Fakude said the 26-year-old shop- owner had not been injured in the incident.

He said no arrests had been made, but noted that armed robberies were on the rise in the town.
