Panga used in killing

Tebogo Tshipi

Limpopo police are looking for a 30-year-old man who allegedly slashed and then killed his one-year-old child with a panga.

Inspector Mohlaka Mashiane, a police spokesman, said before the incident the man and his 23-year-old wife had had an argument on Sunday at about 8.30pm.

"We understand that the argument got so heated that the woman put the baby on her back and walked towards her parents' home," Mashiane said.

Mashiane said the man followed her and chopped her on the head and afterwards began chopping the baby while it was on its mother's back.

Mashiane said the woman managed to run to her parents' home, which was about 300m from the scene of crime.

"She said when she arrived at her parents' home, she realised the baby was not breathing," he said.

He said the family called paramedics, who certified the child dead and took the woman to the provincial hospital, where she is recovering.

Mashiane said the man was still at large.

He appealed to anyone who knows his whereabouts to contact the police on 0800-10111.
