A 63-year-old mentally ill grandmother was allegedly raped on Sunday night in Barberton, Mpumalanga, by someone she knows.

The woman told the police that she went to sleep at 8pm. An hour later she heard a knock on the door.

When she went to open the door a man pushed her inside the house.

He then locked the door and allegedly raped the old woman.

Police spokesman Constable Jabulile Ndubane yesterday said: "The victim screamed for help. Neighbours ran to her assistance.

"The suspect was still in the house when they arrived, but he jumped out of a window and ran away. Though the neighbours gave chase, they were unable to catch him.

"I urge people not to leave their elderly parents alone.

"Criminals are always on the lookout for vulnerable people and they are easy prey for criminals," said Ndubane.

The grandmother was taken to the police station's victim support centre where she was counselled.

Police said it would be easy for the suspect to be arrested because the woman knew him.

Meanwhile, a 33-year-old man was stabbed to death in Dindela, Barberton, on Saturday.

Police said two men were playing a game of dice when the suspect accused the victim of stealing his money. He allegedly stabbed him once in the chest with a knife.

The victim was taken to the Barberton provincial hospital, where he was certified dead on arrival.

A suspect was arrested and will appear in court soon.
