Get Mathe back inside

The dramatic escape of dangerous criminal Ananias Mathe from C-Max prison in Pretoria at the weekend would be a matter of great hilarity if it were not so serious.

The dramatic escape of dangerous criminal Ananias Mathe from C-Max prison in Pretoria at the weekend would be a matter of great hilarity if it were not so serious.

By all accounts, Mathe's escape is storybook material.

We are told he smeared himself with Vaseline so that he could squeeze through a tiny hole not much bigger than an A4 page.

To add more excitement to the story, he had been handcuffed and shackled at all times. And to cock a snook at the prison officials he left them a message on the wall of his cell saying f*** off.

On the face of it, the yarn is difficult to believe. It is easier to believe the version of Correctional Services Minister Ngconde Balfour that Mathe had insider help with his break-out.

The Mozambican rapist and robber was linked to 70 criminal cases. That is no laughing matter.

The police, who described him as the ultimate criminal when they arrested him a few weeks ago, said he used 250 cellphones and commanded a gang of 40.

During his reign of terror, Mathe and his men robbed 28 houses in Thabazimbi, Limpopo, in three days.

An extremely dangerous criminal is on the loose in our communities after escaping from what is supposedly the country's most secure prison.

The priority now is to get him back in prison and to institute a thorough investigation, after which heads must roll.
