A 33-year-old Balfour man arrested for stealing a car engine has died in police custody.
Kleinbooi Nondlwane of Mandela section in Siyathemba, in Balfour, Mpumalanga, was found dead in the holding cells he was sharing with nine other prisoners, said the police.
Inspector Thabiso Ncongwane, of Eastern Highveld area police at Secunda, said Nondlwane was arrested on Friday afternoon after a warrant for his arrest was issued for allegedly stealing a car engine.
"He was detained at 2pm and he had no complaints at all."
Ncongwane said, according to information from his cell mates, Nondlwane complained about having stomach pains at about 8pm on Saturday, but went to sleep without telling the night staff.
He also said the police visited the holding cells on an hourly basis until at about 5.35am yesterday, when they found him dead.
Ncongwane added that a report was sent to the Independent Complaints Directorate.
The cause of death would be determined by a postmortem.
