The Gauteng Department of Education must be lauded for exposing the ghost teacher scam that has resulted in the arrest of four officials.
They allegedly defrauded the department of nearly R1million between February and August. The scam entailed registering nonexistent teachers and paying their salaries into a special bank account.
But this is apparently just the tip of the iceberg. T he Eastern Cape and KwaZulu- Natal Education Departments have been hardest-hit. Stealing taxpayers' money is tantamount to economic sabotage. All efforts have to be made to nail these unscrupulous, greedy officials and ensure that they not only go to jail, but that they also repay the money they stole.
