Jackson Khosa would have turned 103 next month, but a fire snuffed out his long life.
Khosa's body was found after his small hut in Shihasani, outside Malamulele in Limpopo, went up in flames last week.
Stunned villagers woke up on Thursday to hear that Khosa's body had been burnt beyond recognition.
Khosa was a bachelor who spoke out against womanising and is survived only by his relatives.
He also served in the second world war and worked for Eskom for about 30 years.
Police said the cause of the fire was not known. By late yesterday they were still trying to find out what had sparked it.
