The Eastern Cape has lost one of its leading doctors who dedicated his life to serving poor communities.
Zamani Shadrack Ndindwa, 59, died of internal injuries he sustained after his car overturned in Butterworth last week.
Born on April 16 1947, Ndindwa completed matric at Langa High School in 1966. He studied medicine at Durban's Wentworth University.
He graduated from university in 1974 and did his internship at King Edward Hospital.
In 1976 he moved to the Eastern Cape, where he worked as a medical officer at Butterworth Hospital.
In 1981 he married Ndileka and they were blessed with three children - Qaqamba, Bayanda and Maxhosandile.
He was appointed chief medical superintendent at Mthatha General Hospital in 1990.
Ndindwa was transferred to Cecilia Makiwane Hospital (CMH) in 1998, where he was chief medical superintendent until 2002.
After the amalgamation of CMH and Frere Hospital in 2002, he was appointed as head of clinical administration.
Apart from the professional services he rendered to the communities, Ndindwa displayed a keen interest in soccer.
He was a founding member of the Blackburn Rovers football club in Butterworth and spent his leisure time playing table tennis and darts.
At Wentworth he became actively involved in politics, which led him to join the ANC in 1990.
His widow described him as "a staunch member of the ANC who dedicated his life to serving his people and offered free counseling services to the community of Butterworth".
She said her husband would be remembered as a man who espoused high values for human dignity through his humility, a kind-hearted and generous person with a good sense of humour.
"At times he was a principled and uncompromising peacemaker who did not hesitate to speak his mind and truth in the face of his adversaries," said Ndileka.
Ndindwa will be buried in Butterworth tomorrow.
