The body of eight-year-old Alice Mokoena, who drowned in the Natalspruit River on the East Rand, was found yesterday after a two-day search.
Her body was found 7km from where she drowned near her home at Tsietsi informal settlement.
While searching for the girl's body. police divers found the body of a man who they suspect committed suicide.
Mokoena's mother, Elizabeth, 34, said the last time she saw her daughter was when she left for school on Tuesday morning.
"When I returned from work, I found four of her friends waiting for me outside my house.
"They told me Alice had drowned.
"I didn't believe it until they took me to the river bank and showed me her clothes, which she had taken off before getting into the water," she said.
Mokoena, a grade 2 pupil at Phissen Primary School, was the youngest of three children.
Her mother said community members went in search of Alice but they had to call it off because of heavy rain.
The Water Wing division of the North East Rand police spent the past two days searching for Alice's body.
