The office of former president Nelson Mandela came under heavy criticism yesterday at the memorial service for the late Jabu Khanyile.

Khanyile had apparently made a request to see and shake Mandela's hand on his sick bed without success just weeks before he died.

This wish was allegedly communicated to Mandela's office by the dead singer's associates in the music industry.

Responding to the allegations yesterday, Gauteng legislature member the Reverend Motlalepule Chabaku commented: "Jabu was not the only person who has asked to meet Mandela without success.

"Even veterans of the struggle continue to struggle to have their requests to meet Mandela fulfilled. However, Americans, some of them convicts and school dropouts, are able to meet him at will," Chabaku said.

Mandela's office could not be reached before going to press.
