Dedicated science mentor Fararai Frederick Rufetu of Ekangala Comprehensive School in Mpumalanga made a resounding mark for excellence by emerging among the top winners in the National Teaching Awards in Pretoria at the weekend.

Rufetu, who took second spot in the Excellence in High School Teaching category, is the reigning champion of the Aggrey Klaaste Maths, Science and Technology Educator of the Year Awards.

Ngogi Mahaye of Velangaye Secondary School in KwaZulu-Natal took the first spot and Mukondoleli Nemakonde of Ivory Park Secondary School came third.

The other winners were:

Beverly Kopa, Job Maseko Primary School, Gauteng; Jaretha van der Merwe, Eureka Primary School, Northern Cape; and the three-member team of Jacqueline Gwala, Kevin Govender and Angie Pillay.

lExcellence in Primary School Leadership Mojakhumo Dithejane, Molale Primary School, North West; Hendrik Brand, Karookop Primary School, Western Cape; Patricia Lumwil, Madibatlou Farm School, Gauteng.

lExcellence in Secondary School Leadership Johanna Mabusela, Tlou-Nare High School, Limpopo; and the team of Lucian Bok, Wendy Scott, John Vizasie, Bongiwe Zulu and Moses Govender of Little Flower Secondary School, KwaZulu-Natal; Henry Alexander, Bernadino Height High School, Western Cape.

l Excellence in Early Childhood Development Maniela Venter, Vaalpark Primary School, Free State; Beverley Forrest, Lynnwood Ridge Primary School, Gauteng; Nompilo Mjikeliso, Vuleka Pre-Primary School, Eastern Cape.
