An irate man allegedly hit his five-year-old child's head on the floor after accusing her of stealing a R2 coin.
Police spokesman Michael Ngomane said the man, 31, from Mpumalanga, had confessed to assaulting the child, but said he was drunk.
"He said the child angered him by stealing his R2 coin from the house," Ngomane said.
The incident was not reported to the police and the suspect was only arrested a week later after police followed up on rumours in the community.
The man is a farmworker at Tenbosch farm in Komatipoort in Mpumalanga.
The child has been staying with him since he separated from her mother two years ago.
The child has been taken to the Amazing Grace Children's Centre in Malelane for her own safety.
The man was granted bail of R1000 when he appeared in the Komatipoort magistrates' court yesterday on a charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
The case was postponed to December 19 for further investigation.
