Man turns in daughter for murder of grandchild

Glacier Nkhwashu

A woman, 19, has appeared in court charged with the murder of her two-year-old baby girl.

The Ritavi magistrates' court postponed the case to November20 for further police investigation.

Wearing a pink, sleeveless shirt and a red skirt, the suspect, of Nkambako village near Tzaneen in Limpopo, chose to conduct her own defence and was not asked to plead .

She is accused of burying her child in a shallow grave at Slovo River near the village.

She allegedly throttled the child, who did not die, and then dug a small grave and buried her.

Her father told Sowetan that she was disrespectful and did not listen to her parents .

He said she deserved punishment.

"My child was just a men's girl since she was young." he said.

She would invite " boyfriends into my house and they ended up breaking all my windows".

On the day she allegedly killed the child, he had told her to feed the baby, but she refused.

She left home at about 8pm on Tuesday and returned the next day without the child.

He said he alerted the police after his daughter told him that the baby was missing.

"Police took her for questioning and she pointed out a shallow grave," the father said.

"The child's body was buried, but the arm was sticking out."
