Ethiopians reigned supreme during the 10km Pick 'n Pay road race in Diepsloot yesterday whey they clinched the senior men's and women's titles.
Asefa Degene, running for Harmony Athletics Club, was the first man to cross the finish line in a time of 30 minutes and 22 seconds.
He pocketed R400 for his efforts in this yearly development race hosted by the Diepsloot Athletics Club (DAC).
"This is great, I enjoyed the race, though competition was not as tough as expected," said Degene.
Local boy Jackson Chauke, a member of Harambee Athletics Club, came second in 30:38, to clapping and ululation from the local crowd. He got R300 and a further R400 for winning the junior section.
Third was Mr Price's Stephen Molepo, who clocked 30:56 to take home R200. Degene's compatriot and teammate Almnesh Kumela won the women's section in 36:48 to pocket R400, with Keneilwe Molefe (Raiders) second.
Molefe (38:25) got R200 for finishing second and R400 for being the first junior home. Molefe's twin sister Kefilwe was third in 39:24 and won a total of R500.
Puleng Nyaile, chairman of DAC, said they were impressed by the support from other clubs and the community.
"We had a number of big road races in central Gauteng, but we are happy that ours continues to grow in leaps and bounds."
