Booze puts spoke in wheels

The ruling by the supreme court of appeal that gives the state powers to confiscate cars driven by drunk motorists should be hailed.

The ruling by the supreme court of appeal that gives the state powers to confiscate cars driven by drunk motorists should be hailed.

The public should surely embrace the sentiment behind the landmark ruling; that drunken drivers are a danger to other motorists and deserve no sympathy.

Research has shown that drunk motorists are responsible for 50 percent of the deaths on our roads. But drunk drivers have in the past got off the hook with suspended sentences in spite of the alarming statistics. This is shocking, especially when viewed against the background of the high death toll on our roads.

The court's landmark judgment is expected to tighten the screws on drunk drivers who could now forfeit their cars to the state if nabbed. Obviously the legislators will have to take into account complex issues certain to arise from the seizure of bank-financed vehicles.

We hope the ruling will reduce the carnage on our roads, especially during the festive season and the Easter weekend.

Too many lives have been lost on our roads because of reckless, drunk and speeding drivers.

Motorists must now heed the clear message from the supreme court of appeal: stay away from the wheel when you are drunk.
