A high school teacher has been arrested in Mpumalanga for running a syndicate that steals cattle and goats.

The 32-year-old, together with six other men and a woman, was caught in the act with a truck full of goats and cattle in Delmas.

The suspects were arrested on the spot and charged with theft.

They were not asked to plead to charges of theft in the Motetema magistrates' court yesterday and were granted bail of R2000 each.

The teacher, who reportedly teaches at a high school in Marapyane, is alleged to have stolen 132 goats since the beginning of the year and to have sold them to a Delmas farmer.

He also faces charges of stealing four cows.

Police said they worked on a tip- off from members of the community who saw the suspects guiding the animals from a farmer' s truck at the weekend at about midnight.

Superintendent Alpheus Mokale said: "We rushed to the place and found the animals being offloaded from the truck,"

The suspects will appear in court again on November 15.

Police said some people have claimed their animals. They asked other victims to call Superintendent Mokale on 082-565-6524.
