The KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department has launched a probe into a massive driving licensing scam in the province.

Yesterday the department said eight driver's licence instructors from Rossburgh road traffic inspectorate have already been arrested. Another nine officials from the same inspectorate are under investigation.

Yesterday provincial MEC for transport, community safety and liaison, Bheki Cele, pictured below, said the nine were being investigated after they were caught red-handed conducting corrupt activities.

One of the officers, Allen Naidoo, is already on suspension for a sexual harassment charge. He was allegedly caught promising a female licence applicant that she would pass if she agreed to "pay him in kind".

Four were awaiting an internal disciplinary inquiry and the other four were under investigation.
