Benefactor remembers his roots

Alex Matlala

The children of the villages of Maseke and Mashishimale, near Phalaborwa, are ecstatic.

Yesterday they became the proud recipients of a gravel playground and soccer equipment worth R80000.

"We must give many thanks to Ronnie Sutherland and his Madiba Road Construction," said Eunice Mathonsi, founder of the Stars on the Rock Youth Club.

Mathonsi said children in the area had resorted to crime and substance abuse because of the lack of recreational facilities.

Sutherland, raised by a black woman after his parents were killed in the second world war, said: "I want to give back to the community that made me who I am today."
