Don't get carried away when you receive a "guaranteed cash claim" certificate saying that you have won R500000 from Family Insurance Africa Services (Fias).
Because the pay out ranges from R5 to R500 000.
Joseph Masiteng, a loyal member of Fias Cash Giveaway, said he thought his son's future would be bright after he received a letter from the company saying he had won R500 000.
"I could not believe my eyes. I called their office in disbelief and was assured that I was the winner."
He said he spoke to Mark Dunn, chairman of the award committee, who confirmed his winnings.
"But nothing has been deposited into my account."
Consumer Line spoke to Nadine James, who said Masiteng had won R5.
"This amount was deposited into his account on October 28."
James said Fias was not raising people's expectations falsely because the company's letter stated clearly that the client was a guaranteed winner of R5, but would get R500000 if his number was selected in the draw for the grand prize.
A disappointed Masiteng said he thought he was honoured for being a loyal member of Fias for six years. He said he had paid R25 to R40 a month into the company's charity fund since 2000.
"I never thought all my efforts were worth only R5 and I am not sure that I still want to contribute."
James denied that Fias ran a charity fund into which clients had to contribute.
James said: "We are only doing marketing for AIG insurance."
She said Masiteng contributed to a life assurance policy and that was why his debit order contributions increased.
