A Limpopo police constable, attached to the province's VIP protection unit, is under police guard in the Polokwane Hospital after trying to poison himself.
He is suspected of killing his 28-year-old girlfriend at the weekend. The suspect, 33, reportedly had a heated argument with his lover. The woman was shot five times.
Superintendent Patty Khumalo, spokesman for the Capricorn police, identified the dead woman as Pebetse Nkadimeng.
She said the suspect would appear in the Polokwane magistrates' court on December 6.

The married man, 65, who owned several businesses and taxis in Sekonye village, Botlokwa, was said to have had a heated argument with the woman who, community members claimed, was also married.
The police were yesterday trying to trace the couple's relatives so that they could be told of the tragedy.
