Credibility at stake

It's important that the South African Football Association (Safa) be seen to be serious about clamping down on referees who fix games.

It's important that the South African Football Association (Safa) be seen to be serious about clamping down on referees who fix games.

It was disturbing, therefore, to learn that Phillip Tiyane was allowed to officiate at a crucial game between Black Leopards and SuperSport in Thohoyandou on Saturday - a day after he appeared in court on a charge of bribery.

He is alleged to have accepted a R500 bribe from an official whose team subsequently won the Absa Cup qualifier for the Vodacom Promotional League.

Though Tiyane will remain innocent until proven guilty, he should not be assigned to matches until the matter has been settled.

Safa must temporarily relieve him of his duties.
