Leaders and members of Zion churches in Umlazi, Durban, have vowed to clear the church's name by working with the police to make sure that criminals posing as their members are brought to book.
This comes after reports that a group of criminals, dressed in full Zion church uniforms, have been responsible for hijackings, robberies and rapes in the township.
"We won't let these criminals use our church and God's name to carry out the work of the devil," said Reverend Zakaria Sithole of the Holy Banner Ethiopian Apostolic Church of Zion, in Umlazi.
Zion church members are known for walking long distances in groups at night for praying overnight, especially at weekends. The thugs are taking advantage of this to surprise their victims.
Sithole appealed to Zion church leaders and members of the community to work with the police to bring these criminals to book.
Police spokesman Captain Vincent Mdunge said a case had yet to be opened.
