Phaswana, 61, is on the board of Anglo American. He is chairman of Anglo American South Africa, state logistics group Transnet and Ethos Private Equity, and is also a non-executive director of media firm Naspers.
"The position comes at an exciting time when Anglo's performance is strong and the company has an impressive pipeline of new projects," he said.
Phaswana previously worked for BP in Africa and Europe and was the BP regional president for Africa from 1999 to 2002. Former positions include director of BP Oil, Benelux, associate president BP Netherlands and chairman and chief executive BP Southern Africa.
