Pays price for bribery

The World Bank has barred German firm Lahmeyer International from winning contracts financed by the bank because of a finding that the company paid bribes to secure work on the Lesotho Highlands water project.

The World Bank has barred German firm Lahmeyer International from winning contracts financed by the bank because of a finding that the company paid bribes to secure work on the Lesotho Highlands water project.

A spokesman for the bank said yesterday: "The sanctions committee found that Lahmeyer . bribed the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority's chief executive, Masupha Sole."

Sole was the government official responsible for awarding contracts.

The sanction will prevent the company from getting World Bank-financed contracts for seven years. The bar could be reduced by four years if the bank finds that Lahmeyer had met specific compliance conditions and had cooperated in disclosing past misconduct. - Sapa
