On October 27 I flew out of OR Tambo. Going through the security check, I put my wallet, keys and cellphone in the security basket. I must have been distracted because I then took the keys and cellphone but left my wallet behind.
When I arrived at Port Elizabeth I asked the woman at the help desk at the SAA business class lounge to make inquiries at OR. She was confident that if I left my wallet at a security check point I would find it.
She gave me a contact person at OR, but on my return I discovered that the person, a manager, was off duty.
As I drove away from the airport I was contacted by KG Ngoepe from airport security.
He told me he had found my wallet and suggested I return to the airport. He also provided me with the name of an employee, Alistair Smith, at departure security, who I found waiting for me at the airport.
Smith returned my wallet and asked me to check if everything was there. Everything was intact.
This experience has restored my confidence in my country. It shows that things can, and do, work - and that is critical in these times.
