As the country waits with bated breath for the high court's decision today on the fate of convicted fraudster Schabir Shaik, the Scorpions have stung again.

This time their target is former Limpopo premier Ngoako Ramatlhodi, whose two homes were raided in the early hours of last Thursday morning.

It is important to note that nobody should be above the law, and if the police have reason to believe that Ramatlhodi or anybody else has fallen foul of the law, the wheels of justice must turn, and be seen to be doing just that.

It is concerning, though, that in recent years we have seen the reputations of top personalities taking serious knocks in highly publicised raids by the police.

Disappointingly, there have been hardly any successful prosecutions to speak of to justify the hoo-ha that normally surrounds raids on and "investigations" of such people.

Understandably, this leads to claims that political witchhunts are behind many raids and so-called investigations.

Ramatlhodi himself claims he had to prod the police to get moving with an investigation that dates back several years, hence the raids.

If there is reason to charge Ramatlhodi - and the police seem to suggest there is - speed up the process and either convict or clear the man.
