Police are searching for a suspect or suspects who raped and strangled a 75-year-old pensioner to death in her bed between Sunday night and Monday night.
Selita Nonyane, of Wales village, near Acornhoek, in Mpumalanga, was last seen alive when she returned home from church on Sunday afternoon.
Her neighbours were concerned that something might have happened to the woman.
When they went to investigate they found her dead in her shack.
They called the police, whose preliminary investigations showed that she had been raped before being strangled to death.
Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe yesterday said that her shack was looted.
"We are appealing to members of the community who might have information that might help us arrest the culprit or culprits to help us so that justice can prevail."
Ngoepe said that it was sad that an old lady staying alone was attacked after having returned from church.
"It is an extremely evil deed and we vow not to leave any stone unturned in our investigations to get to the bottom of matter."
It is not clear why the woman was staying alone.
