Two security guards are wondering who was watching over them when they were shot at, their vehicle was rammed and forced off the road, and they were bundled into the boot of a car while the hijackers made off with the loot.

The guards, who were transporting a large amount of money from Polokwane to Tzaneen at about 4am yesterday, were lucky to survive their ordeal uninjured.

Several men travelling in two BMWs, a Mercedes-Benz and a 4x4 bakkie fired shots at the Fidelity Guards vehicle then rammed it, forcing it to stop at Makgeng village, near Boyne, about 40km east of Polokwane.

According to Limpopo police spokesman Superintendent Ronel Otto, when the security vehicle came to a standstill the robbers forced the security guards out. They disarmed them and forced them into the boot of one of the BMWs.

One of the robbers drove the security vehicle to a dumping site about 28km from where the attack took place.

"The men used the security vehicle to burst through a brick building at the dumping site. They then used a cutting torch to open the security vehicle, from which they took an undisclosed amount of money," explained Otto.

She said the suspects fled in the BMW and the bakkie, leaving the other BMW and the Mercedes behind.

It has been established that the Mercedes was stolen in Sandton, Johannesburg last month and the BMW in Edenvale, Johannesburg in September.

The security guards freed themselves from the boot of the BMW and alerted the police. They were not injured.

No arrests have been made. Investigations are continuing.
